About PACTS Inc.
Pacts Inc. is an organization focused on improving the quality of life for Black People in America. This does not mean that we hate or dislike anyone else. It also does not mean that we don't at times align ourselves with other communities to accomplish things. We want to see everyone flourishing and being treated fairly, we simply work towards that goal from the Black American Direction. Black people have a unique history and a unique set of challenges. It is difficult to fully address those challenges when operating under the label of a minority group that has it’s attentions spread out over multiple groups with multiple different issues and priorities. We do not hate any other groups and we will work with them on intersecting issues, however we feel that we must put us first in order to see the changes we truly wish to see. Just like women have their own groups, LGBTQ have their own groups, Native Americans have their own groups, Black Americans need our own groups, groups that cater to and advocate for Black Americans only with no other priorities to complicate things.
Pacts Inc. was initially Urban Intellectuals Movement Inc. Urban Intellectuals (UI) started in late 2007 as a Hip Hop Discussion Forum. A place where people could get together and discuss Hip Hop Culture and its impact on the world especially in the inner cities of America. The early discussions were a comparison of past Hip Hop to current Hip Hop with regards to artist and lyrics. Over time the discussions evolved into a broader discussion about Black People and their relationship with America. In 2008 Urban Intellectuals was born.
Noticing that black people didn’t have control of our own narratives and images, UI decided to become focused on becoming Black America’s primary source of news. For the next for the next 5 years, UI presented news and other pieces from a Black Perspective. Within 5 Years UI had gained a following of over 50,000 people on Facebook and remains one of the largest Pro-Black Pages on Facebook to date.
After a tide of murders and other tragedies occurring in the Black Community in 2013-14, UI followers began to challenge the organization with a different set of questions. These questions caused a re-evaluation of what UI was doing and, even more importantly, what UI could be doing to help Black America develop into the powerhouse that it should be. The answer was simple, not only did we need to be reporting on what was happening in Black America, we needed to be active in influencing it.
In 2014 The UI Non-Profit was born under the corporate name of Urban Intellectuals Movement Inc. in Charlotte, North Carolina. The goal of the Non-Profit is to develop (not transform) Black America to its highest peak through empowering education, cultural realignments, economic development, and political aggressiveness. However, it soon became apparent that the non-profit needed its own banner because its approach was not congruent with the approach that had traditionally been the UI way. In January of 2016 the Urban Intellectuals Non-Profit re-branded itself as PACTS Inc. PACTS standing for: Power, Affinity. Consciousness, Truth and Singularity.
